The 8 UN38.3 Tests — What Your Battery Must Survive

Every battery model we manufacture must pass all eight tests in sequence. There are no shortcuts, no exemptions, and no passing grades below 100%:

T1 — Altitude Simulation. Stored at 11.6 kPa (equivalent to 15,000 meters) for 6+ hours at room temperature. Simulates unpressurized cargo hold conditions. Pass criteria: no leakage, no venting, no fire, no rupture.
T2 — Thermal Cycling. 10 cycles between -40°C and +75°C, with a minimum 6-hour dwell at each extreme and a maximum 30-minute transition. Simulates temperature swings during air and ground transport. Pass criteria: no leakage, no venting, no fire, no rupture.
T3 — Vibration. Sine-sweep vibration from 7 Hz to 200 Hz and back, spanning 15 minutes per axis across three axes. Simulates truck, rail, and air cargo vibration. Pass criteria: no leakage, no venting, no fire, no rupture.
T4 — Shock. Three shocks per direction in each of six directions — 150 g peak acceleration for batteries under 4.48 kg. Simulates rough handling and cargo drops. Pass criteria: no leakage, no venting, no fire, no rupture.
T5 — External Short Circuit. Terminals shorted with a total external resistance below 0.1 Ω, held at 55°C for at least one hour after the case temperature returns to within 10°C of ambient. Tests the BMS short-circuit protection response. Pass criteria: case temperature below 170°C, no fire, no rupture within 6 hours.
T6 — Impact / Crush. A 9.1 kg bar dropped from 61 cm onto a bar placed across the cell center (impact) or 13 kN of crush force applied (crush). Tests mechanical abuse tolerance. Pass criteria: case temperature below 170°C, no fire, no rupture within 6 hours.
T7 — Overcharge. Charged at twice the recommended rate for 24 hours. Tests the BMS overcharge cutoff. Pass criteria: no fire, no rupture within 7 days.
T8 — Forced Discharge. A fully discharged cell is connected in series with a fully charged cell of the same type. Tests deep-discharge safety. Pass criteria: no fire, no rupture within 7 days.

If you buy from a UN38.3 battery manufacturer, you are buying from a supplier whose products have survived this entire sequence. If you buy from a supplier who cannot produce a test report, you are gambling every time the battery goes on a plane.
